Umm...can we get this guy's address?

Look at the latest entry on our Father's Day Giveaway. I don't even know this guy and I'm sending him a Father's Day Card.
Years ago, I saw an interview with Gwyneth Paltrow that really stuck with me. Apparently, her father was quite an amazing guy. She was talking about how wonderful he was and told a story about him that was very touching. When Paltrow was 10, her dad took her on a father-daughter trip to France. On the plane trip over, he told her, "I wanted you to see Paris for the first time with a man who will always love you." I thought that was the most special thing I had ever heard of a man doing until this......

My Dad is the winner. Always has been. Doesn't matter what the contest is for, he should win. My Dad took on an insta-family when he married my mom nearly 16 years ago. My brother and I were hers from a previous marriage and he welcomed us as his own from the very start despite our rather broken state. Leaving my crappy past mostly out of this story, I'll just say that I was so ready for someone to step up and really fill that role of father in my life and this man finally did. Over the years he's shown me more love and respect and joy than all the years prior to him joining our family and the most important event of all is my submission for this contest. For my thirteenth birthday my Dad secretly planned a date for just he and I to go to dinner while we were already on vacation in California. After getting ready (in a horrible state do to raging acne and a dress I hated), I marched outside with my head down only to glance up and see a limo waiting for us. I was taken on my first and only limo ride to the Ritz and on the the table where we were seated was a beautiful vase of red roses with a tiny box beside it. After we settled in and Dad placed an order for some tasty treats, the box was presented to me... "This is a ring from your mother and I and it represents your heart, (gold ring with heart shape and tiny diamond in center) I want you to wear it and promise me that you'll let me protect your heart until the right man comes along to take care of it forever." "There's a key to that heart" he went on to say (holds up tiny little gold key on chain) "and I'm going to keep the key safe and sound until the day you're married and then I'll give it to your husband so he can have the key to your heart." Dad went on to say how important I was and how much he loved me and wanted me to always know that we were partners on my journey through adolescence. I can't tell you how special I felt and how much he made me feel worthy of the very best by his words and actions in that one evening. I wore that ring until it was replaced by an engagement ring and it guided every decision I made along my path to finding the man of my dreams. I mean, next to my Dad of course! I still get teary when I tell that story or think back on it and I how it was such a simple thing to do, but how it changed my life forever. I love my Dad, there really aren't enough words, but I've obviously found a few today! Happy Father's Day Daddy!

Gee, shucks folks... He's is indeed that amazing.

I remember that story of Gwen (we're buds so I can shorten her name) Paltrow's too... It always resonated with me because of how important those little moments are to a young lady where she is made to feel worthy of the very best and confident about being loved for the right reasons. May we all strive to offer that to the little ladies in our lives! It changed/shaped my life.

P.S. Good Lord I talk allot! Umm, just thought I'd follow that story with a blip about the gold key. Yep, that puppy showed up on my wedding day as my Dad was giving me away. He pulled it out and asked if I remembered it and the water works started flowing! So many joyful tears. A nice little shpeel about the story of the key, which my nearly-husband did already know, and then he handed it over to the love of my life to take on the task of looking out for my little heart. Such a good man.

i can totally vouch for him. i have heard that story before and it makes me wish they were all like that. jack is a fantastic human being who raised the best daughter ever. he is a winner if i ever saw one. he needs to write a manual on how to do it.

Well, now it all makes sense. His name is Jack. I have a theory that all really great men are named, Jack, *Tom, or Sam

*I had this theory, before I had a Tom of my very own
