hey, can I do that?

Every time someone sees how the soap bricks are cut at Sweet Petula, they always ask, "Hey, can I do that?" It is pretty nifty. So I thought I'd share photos of how it is done.

Photo #1 (above) The bricks. I make 90 lbs of soap, pour it into a large Plexiglas mold, then cut that big block into smaller bricks. These are those bricks.

#2 Each brick sits on the cutter (which has interchangeable bar sizes.....that is the white plate thing on the bottom)

#3, you push the grid over the brick & viola! Soap bars. This part is very satisfying. Think of cutting a 8 lb hunk of cheese at once. It just feels cool.

#4 Detail of the small end pieces that get cut off. These pieces (usually bigger than what you see in this photo) are where my soap seconds come from.

#5 It's like magic.

This makes me very happy. Tonight I saw three reviews on Anthropologie.com of my Petite Shea Butter Soaps. All (very lovely) customers gave Sweet Petula 4 out of 4 stars!

new solid perfume formulations

I've spent the last few weeks working on a new solid perfume recipe. The new formula is 100% vegan (the last one had beeswax in it.) And the scents are more concentrated.

You can see the 5 different scents we have available here. One is brand spanking new, Sweet Lily Blossom, and really my newest favorite thing. A bunch of you that attended Girls Night Out last week got a preview of this fragrance.

I've also discontinued Pink Garden Rose & Day Dream (these scents will still be available in the shea butter soaps, so don't fret.) If your interested in the last few of these, they can be found here.

hello there...where have you been all my life?

I really really really want this table. I've been shopping for a dining room table for months...almost a year practically, and this is the table of my dreams. I like to buy things that will last years, if not a lifetime and I tend to have analysis paralysis when it comes to decorating my own home. But this table is it. I have chosen it. I love it. Made of reclaimed mahogany with cast iron bases (which are salvaged from a 100 year old leather belt driven metal lathe.) You can buy one here. Now where is that extra $2500.00 I had lying around?

Now all I need is a Ken Doll.

Today is my good pal Casey's birthday! He is the genius behind www.sweetpetula.com and one of my favorite boys in the entire world. He always keeps me on track. & he smells really really good. (like sandalwood...but back off...he's taken) Happy Birthday C!

Happy Father's Day!

The last month brought 2 additions to my family of little tiny baby girls. Soon I will have an army. An army of Little Sweetest Petulas. We will dress in tutus and march! (not sure what our cause will be just yet....I'm working on it) But, in honor of the two fellas that made my newest neices possible.....Happy Father's Day!

Above is my sister with her husband Leif and their first baby Anneka....just a few days ago little baby Ella was added to their sweet family. Let's call her LBE.

And above, my brother-in-law Steve with his little girl Reagan. Steve & my sister added Faith just a few weeks ago! (p.s. check out that glass of what I'm pretty sure is Crown Royal!)

lavender lemonade

If (I mean WHEN) it gets sunny around here....I'm going to make lavender lemonade. I think mine will have gin in it.

4 c. water

1/4 c. chopped lavender leaves

2/3 c. sugar

1 c. fresh lemon juice (about 6 lemons)

Lavender stems for garnish

Bring 1 c. water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Combine the boiling water & lavender in a medium bowl. Cover & steep for 30 minutes. Strain the lavender mixture through a fine sieve into a bowl; discard the lavender leaves.

Combine 3 c. water and sugar in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, and cook 1 minute or until sugar is dissolved. Combine lavender water, sugar syrup, and lemon juice in a pitcher. Cover & chill. (that's just good instructions there for anything...cover & chill) Serve over ice. Garnish with lavender stems.
